The above photos are from two dies for the same job. The left one was rubbered conventionally and required 1330 pieces and untold hours of an experienced diemaker's time. The die on the right used MRP Customer Water Jet-cut Rubber: Only 491 pieces of adhesive backed rubber with mapping provided, so a secretary with no previous experience was able to rubber the die quickly and accurately.

The die on the left ran at 4000 hits per hour while the MRP die ran at 6500 hits per hour. That's a 62.5% increase in press speed for this job...which also means an equal improvement in profits as well. (What's more, the MRP die was so balanced from an election standpoint that it ran at this speed without nicking the cutting rule).

High-Speed Water Jet Cutting Machine

Imagine a perfectly rubbered die board…  See increased performance and longer life in the press.  The marbajet, simply the fastest water jet available, is a remarkable machine.  Your turn around time will increase dramatically on both large and small dies.  Made by Marbach Automation, Europe’s largest die maker, it is designed specifically for rubber cutting.  It is, technologically, the most advanced package on the market.  Let’s talk size:  The marbajet cuts rubber on a table of 500x500mm (19x19 in.).  Some people question the work area, saying it’s too small.  How little do they know about MarbaCAD with its advanced (plus easy to use) Rubber Nester.  The Rubber Nester takes all the pieces of rubber on the die, automatically calculates where to place them in order to minimize wasted space (rubber), and thus allows for larger dies to be cut on a single sheet of rubber.  As a matter of fact, most dies “shrink” so small together that they fit on 1/3 of the sheet.  Most of the time people do not believe how little rubber is needed!  The machine is actually perfect for 18x36 in. sheets of rubber.  The excess rubber lies on the machine table, just behind the work area.  When you are finished cutting a job, simply rotate the rubber sheet, or have the machine cut off the cut rubber.  An advantage of having a 500x500 mm work area is a small footprint for the machine.  The machine and high-pressure pump will fit in almost any shop, even if space is limited, due to its small footprint.  Because the machine is so quiet, there is no need to section off your shop because of noise.  Most people program right next to the machine.

SPEED:  The traverse speed of the machine is 70 m/min (2,800 IPM), making it the fastest water jet on the market.  One of our customers was able to cut 4 times faster with the marbajet vs. his “other” water jet.  By the way we are talking actual production, not a setting of ideal circumstances as many people do their “tests.”  A typical 18x18 in. sheet of nested rubber can be cut in 8 ~ 10 minutes.  But we are not claiming to beet physics.  This all of course still depends on your pressure setting and type of rubber.

SAFETY:  When working with pressures around 55,000 PSI, it is absolutely critical that the operator’s safety be ensured.  Marbach has definitely taken this more serious than most others.  All high-pressure lines are constructed of rigid stainless steel tubing (Sometimes the “high-pressure hoses” of our competitors scare me).  Even when I see them on a show I try to stay away.  The tubing in the marbajet is routed up the back of the machine where it passes thru three sets of coils.  Coil technology is used to make leaks less likely and allows the work area to be completely enclosed in 5/16 in. thick plexiglass.  I don’t even want to think about those flexible whips in other machines.  The marbajet cannot be operated without the cover closed, safety first!  If the cover is open during cutting the high pressure jet of water is shut off instantly and the machine stops moving.

EASE OF USE:  The marbajet is the easiest machine an operator could ever run.  There is no setup, other than putting the rubber on the cutting area.  Close the cover and press the green “Start” button.  The program is seamlessly transferred from the CAD to the water jet via a standard Ethernet cable (or your own LAN) in a couple of seconds.  The only adjustments you’ll even need to deal with are the height of the cutting nozzle, feed rate setting, and cutting pressure setting, which is adjusted by a knob on top of the pump.   The machine is designed to be easy to use by anyone

TECHNOLOGY:  The beauty of the marbajet is that it is a very sophisticated, high-tech machine, yet is simple to operate and by no means, an ugly machine.  The artistic touch by the Germans really show in this machine.  The machine is controlled by a state-of-the-art PC based CNC Control (also manufactured in Germany).  The cutting nozzle traverses along Franke linear slides, which are driven by high-speed, digital servomotors.  The servomotors are controlled by digital drives that interface to the CNC control via fiber optic cables.  The CNC control uses Windows 2000 so network connections are made with ease and the system is extremely reliable.

HIGH-PRESSURE PUMP: The high-pressure pump is made by KMT Water Jet, located in Baxter Springs, KS.  KMT makes extremely reliable pumps for a wide range of industries and has over 30 years of experience in water jet cutting.  The intensifier is driven by a 15HP electric motor that generates up to 60,000 PSI.  Thanks to the efficient design, maintenance is easy and the pump is extremely reliable.  And best of all, all parts are stocked right in Baxter Springs Kansas and can be shipped next day.

MAINTENANCE:  The machine is low maintenance (ask us for our free maintenance chart).  The sealed liner slides only require weekly lubrication (takes about 5 minutes) and have a life of up to 10 years.  The cutting nozzle should be replaced every 2-3 weeks, assuming full time operation.  The high-pressure pump is very low maintenance as well, and comes with a very easy to follow video.  A complete maintenance schedule is available.  Contact us for more info.

INSTALLATION:  The installation of the machine is very straightforward.  There are three basic floor plans to choose from.  One this has been done, you follow an installation checklist that guides you thru the entire preparation process, up until the time the machine is powered up.  480V 3-phase is required for the high-pressure pump and the machine.  A filtered, 85PSI air supply is needed, as well as a drain for the wastewater.
